ARIA Attributes

Menus use proper ARIA attributes to communicate structure and state to assistive technologies.
Menu Roles
Menu items use appropriate ARIA roles.
  • role="menuitem" for standard menu items
  • role="menuitemcheckbox" for checkbox items
  • role="menuitemradio" for radio items
  • role="separator" or role="presentation" for labels (handled by Radix UI)
Menu States
Menu items communicate their state through ARIA attributes.
  • aria-checked for checkbox, switch (MenuItemSwitch), and radio items—state lives on the menuitemcheckbox / menuitemradio, not on a nested role="checkbox" or role="switch"
  • aria-disabled for disabled items
  • aria-selected for selected items (handled by Radix UI)
Decorative indicators (CheckboxVisual, SwitchVisual) are aria-hidden paint only. For the full do/don't pattern (no nested interactive checkbox, switch, or radio), see Interactive MenuItem children.
Label Association
Menu items with checkboxes and radios include proper labels.
The label prop provides accessible labeling for checkbox and radio items.
