Name
A linked chip is one link. Its name is the chip text followed by the new-tab announcement, 1 · Layout guide Opens in a new tab. The external glyph is decorative. A static chip is a span with its text and no role.
Keyboard and focus
A linked chip is one tab stop. Enter activates it. The focus ring is Link's, and the anchor is rounded like the chip so the ring hugs it.
Target size
A chip in running text is as tall as its Badge, which is below the 24px minimum of a control. WCAG 2.2 exempts a target inside a sentence from the minimum (2.5.8, inline exception), and a citation always sits in a sentence. Keep a separate list of sources for a touch layout that needs bigger targets.
Contrast
The label is the informative status foreground on its status fill. The browser tests run axe over the linked chip in light and dark.
Forced colors
The anchor and the chip take system colors. Hover and press change brightness only, which forced colors leaves unfiltered, so the chip reads as a link by its text and glyph.
Right to left
The chip text, the glyph and the chip order follow the inline direction.
